Knock off the Digital Slavery

“Dopamine Detox” or “Dopamine Fasting” is a bandwagon and is being used by a considerable number of people nowadays. There are many people who might have a clue of the same whilst, some among you came across this term for the first time. Let’s discuss and dive into the exhaustive information pertaining to this.

For those who are on the lookout for it, should kick off with knowing what Dopamine is and what are its functions. Ergo, Dopamine is an organic chemical of the hormone families which are responsible for stimulants of the central nervous system and neurotransmitters, Dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter in the brain.

Putting it simply, it plays a vital role in reward and movement regulation in the brain.

It’s produced in the body and is used by the nervous system to send messages to the nerves. Hence, this is the rationale for why it is also alluded to as “Chemical Messenger”. It is released during pleasurable situations and stimulates one to seek out the pleasurable activity or occupation. Since it manages neurological and physiological functioning, it is usually known as “Feel Good Hormone”.

Dopamine governs how we feel pleasure, strive, focus, motor functioning, mood, and find things interesting. It's essential for thinking and planning. Too much or too little of it can lead to numerous health issues. Some are serious, like Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with walking, balance, and coordination. May also cause mental and behavioral changes, sleep problems, depression, memory difficulties, and fatigue if it gets worse.

Also, the disbalance of the hormone can lead to many other diseases like:

  • difficulty eating and swallowing

  • weight loss or weight gain

  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), constipation

  • trouble sleeping or disturbed sleep

  • low energy, fatigue, inability to focus

  • moving or speaking more slowly than usual

  • feeling demotivated, anxious, mood swings and feeling inexplicably sad or tearful

  • feeling hopeless, guilt-ridden, low self-esteemed, suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm

  • lack of insight or self-awareness

  • binge-eating, addiction, and gambling

Dopamine drives a person to look for more and more of anything and consequently causes him to want, desire, seek out, and search. It increases the general level of arousal and goal-directed behavior. It also induces curiosity and fuels you searching for information.

If you are looking out for ways to increase the levels of Dopamine in your body then, here are few tips to shoot it up naturally:

  • Eat foods rich in tyrosine and magnesium including cheese, meats, fish, dairy, soy, seeds, nuts, beans, lentils, among others.

  • Avoid processed foods, high-fats, sugar, caffeine.

  • Proper sleep to increase dopamine production.

  • Exercise daily, meditate and do a breathing exercise to reduce stress level

Apple and blackberry were vital when they were just fruits. Pun Intended!

Nevermind,

In this digital world, everyone is so addicted and tempted to technology. One can’t miss a phone ring or a notification. But the habit sometimes becomes so bad that one can’t avoid even a single notification and reply to it instantly even if the person is sleeping, sick, or into something urgent. There are people who are gaming putz, who spend hours in front of a gaming screen. To keep the Dopamine level balanced one can adopt the technique of Dopamine Fasting. The goal is to include breaks in our routine that will reboot and rebalance the enunciated hormone. There are few ways to include the practice in one’s routine as per their feasibility and suitability:

  • Find one to four hours at the end of the day to do dopamine fast or,

  • Can pick one weekend day and spend it outside the digital sphere,

  • One weekend per quarter or one week per year.

  • Vacation and traveling also boosts one’s Dopamine level.

  • Stop push notification on regular intervals

  • Try to go without a phone to nearby places (if not going for urgent work)

  • Gym and go on a walk without mobile phones

  • Keep the phone away from yourself if you are into something urgent.

  • Avoid wake-up with your phone in the morning

Did you surmise why this concept started?

California Psychiatrist Dr. Cameron Sepah, explains the purpose of this technique is not to avoid dopamine but rather to reduce impulsive behaviors that are rewarded by dopamine. The practice of dopamine fasting is not clearly defined in what it entails, on what technologies, with what frequency it should be done, or how it is supposed to work.

Proponents argue that it is a way to exert greater self-control and self-discipline over one's life, and New York Times technology journalist Nellie Bowles finds that dopamine fasting makes everyday life "more exciting and fun".

The sum and substance is that, we should not do anything extreme that we lose its value, importance, and interest in it. A pace should be maintained and that the control and discipline is ensured.

Take a stab at the technique and contemplate if it's laudable.

Let’s Infuse the Focus Booster!

You might be coming across with dreadful headlines flashing every now and then on your TV or mobile screens related to Covid-19, maybe waking up with a newspaper filled with news on negative impacts of COVID-19 on mankind and the economy around the globe.

The rumination that incepts on this pandemic is a “Jinx”.

Wouldn’t you denote the year 2020 as “The bane of the century”?

I reckon, you will agree unquestionably because we are continuously confronting huge losses in terms of lives, environment and consequently a huge economic turmoil.

The current phase has transformed the way and standard of living enormously. The countries around the globe were compelled to introduce and ensure a Lock down, the only way to flatten the curve of corona positive cases. Populace is experiencing economic recession, losses and shutdown of numbers of businesses worldwide consequently, loss of employment..The unemployment rate has significantly increased in this lock down. Nevertheless, work from home is allowed in a few sectors to conduct as much business activities as possible. Educational Institutes are being operated online to avoid interruption to the pedagogy..

Work from home is an approach which is so prevalent since this lock down is being introduced. Earlier also, it was adopted by many organizations but it has become customary even more. It is an idea that increases productivity of the employees, saving time in prinking and commuting. It can be even more beneficial if done adequately.

Here are a few methods which I would like to address here as a crux of my research.

We need to focus on whatever we are doing to ensure efficiency of the task we are into. As per the evolutionary biology, a human brain cannot focus on a single task for  too long. The attention span of a person depends upon his age, his interest and his fluency with the work. According to a study by Microsoft, the average human being now has an attention span of eight seconds.

To improve one’s focus, one can follow the Pomodoro technique of time management, This technique uses a timer to break down work into intervals, traditionally 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks of 5 minutes. This 25 minutes may vary from toe-to-toe.As per an article published by The Muse, it has been found that some people are able to focus for 57 minutes followed by short breaks of 17 minutes whereas some can focus for 25 or 45 minutes., one needs to experiment with oneself to figure out his/her average attention span.

There are many applications available to practice pomodoro such as, tomighty, Focus -To-Do, PomoDone etc. It helps in increasing concentration, reducing back pain, reduces mental fatigue, maintains motivation, improves planning and accountability etc.

The said technique emphasizes on improving focus in a particular task. Yet, one can follow the below mentioned pointers to make the technique fruitful:

  • Set an objective

  • Plan your work

  • Work on the task

  • Take a short break after it.

After every 4 pomodoros, take a long break of 15 minutes. Remember that, whenever you are taking a break; do anything but work. Stay away from screens, can do a little exercise or stretching and most importantly, do not think about the work. Means, whatever you do, do it full on.

Samuel Smiles states that  "The shortest way to do many things is to do only one thing at once." Hence, if you are working, work without interruption and don’t accept false emergencies at the time. Likewise, when on a break, give yourself a complete break.

Not just time management, your posture also plays a very important role while concentrating on your work. It would be labor in vain to focus on your work if you are sitting in an arduous posture. So, your posture should be pain free.

  • Keep your screen or monitor at eye-height and tilt it a little to have a full view of the screen.

  • Keep your screen at least a foot and a half away from your eyes to avoid irritation and stress to your eyes.

  • Keep your elbows on respective sides and forearms parallel to the ground. Ensure that you can access the keyboard easily.

  • Sit comfortably with back straight and allow your feet to rest on the floor.

By lifting a finger and comprising these minimal steps, one can enhance one’s productivity and efficiency during work from home or continuing their studies from home efficiently. Adapting this brainwave, we will not be only productive but will be able to kick-boredom while working.
